This piece is based on Hinemoana being surrounded in darkened waters, holding the weight of the pollution that enters our waters at Moa point.
Based around the sewage spill in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, where millions of litres of untreated wastewater have been discharged into the ocean after the treatment plant failed weeks ago.
It’s hard not to think about the ecosystems being affected by this and the wildlife still surviving in it, if they are. She represents the life still in there.
With the spill, I feel landlocked and cut off from our beautiful waters. The environment in Wellington is my favourite part of this city. It feels like a massive part is being taken away. This piece represents that beauty in our oceans and environment, but also the darkness around what is happening right now.
